About Kurant

Kurant Visningsrom is an artist-run exhibition space and meeting place for contemporary art in Romsa/Tromsø. Founded by students at the Tromsø Academy of Contemporary Art in 2008, Kurant has since been run by successive generations of local artists.

We provide artists with the space, resources, and opportunities to develop, produce, and present new work. With a particular emphasis on young and emerging artists, Kurant supports experimentation, risk-taking, and practices that move across established formats and disciplines.

Kurant is located in a former commercial building at Hansjordnesgata 1B, where we share our premises with Insomnia Festival and Sasusu Radio. The building houses exhibition spaces, workspaces, a radio studio, a communal kitchen, and a flexible multipurpose space for events and production. Through exhibitions, film screenings, concerts, performances, talks, reading groups, radio broadcasts, workshops, parties, and shared meals, we aim for the building to serve both as a professional platform for art and as a lively social meeting place.

Kurant is built on a democratic, artist-run model in which the institution is shaped by those who take part in it. Responsibility for Kurant is passed from one generation of artists to the next, allowing the space to continually evolve in response to new needs, practices, and ideas. Kurant is currently run by artists Magnus Skei Holmen and Niels Nielsen.

Kurant is a place for production, exchange, and shared experience—and a free space for young, independent, and experimental art in the North.

To produce and present contemporary art to a broad public, while supporting, developing, and strengthening Tromsø’s art scene.

Vision

Kurant aims to be an open and vibrant artist-run infrastructure in the North—a place where artists can develop and test new ideas, where different practices and forms of knowledge can meet, and where art can emerge through collaboration, risk-taking, and exchange.

We believe in artist-run spaces as places where institutions can be imagined and organised differently: from the ground up, collectively, and in a continuous state of change.
